My Story
What started with me carving sticks in the back woods, has turned into a love of knife making.
Hi, I’m Emmett and I am 12 years old. I started making wooden knives when I was younger, usually carving them out of sticks. Then I asked my dad if I could use the jigsaw and began making large knives and swords with the scraps of plywood we had around the house. From there, I wanted to try creating a knife out of some old rusty steel I found in the shed. That’s how it all started for me.
I began that process with my older brother. Eventually he slowed down but I was hooked. I made about 25 knives with any scrap metal I could find. I started watching some YouTube videos and learned that I needed to slow down and take my time, and then I started to see my skills improve.
My dad has taught me how to use most tools, like the angle grinder, files, and drill press. I have recently learned to use a 2x72 belt grinder, and it helps me get more precise bevels and plunges.
I really love working with my hands. Making knives is my favorite thing to do. Every day I get up, get my school work done quickly so I can spend the rest of the day down in the shop. I am so glad I am home-schooled so I have the opportunity to do this.
I do not have all the fancy tools and machines, but I’m learning new things all the time, and hoping to upgrade my tools as my skills improve. Thank you for supporting me as I continue to learn and grow as a craftsman.
